Ethical People
CLAIM #2
Students at OWL work to become ethical people by learning, practicing, and modeling the positive academic and emotional behaviors through our Habits of Work and Learning, which form the foundation of the Crew curriculum.
The bedrock of Open World Learning Community is Crew. Crews are OWL are unique as they are made up of mixed grade levels, from 6th to 12th grade, and they are also looped. This allows for Crew leaders, members, and families to develop strong bonds and long-standing relationships. OWL has had advisory periods and homerooms for many years prior to its adoption of EL Education practices, but the impact of Crew, and its character education has been profound.
Since instituting Crew, students and staff alike have written Crew lessons and contributed to a shared curriculum that introduces new students to our school and provides explicit instruction in our school Habits of Work and Learning, or HOWLs: collaboration, responsibility, integrity, perseverance, and stewardship.
